55 I
observed that they were also among the noble and great ones
who were chosen in the beginning to be rulers in
the Church of God.
56 Even before they were born, they, with many
others, received their first lessons in
the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth in the due time of the Lord to labor in his vineyard for the
salvation of the souls of men. Doctrine
and Covenants 138:55-56
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after
him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 For
in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your
own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch
then as we are the offspring of God, we ought
not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by
art and man’s device.
30 And the
times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every
where to repent:
31 Because
he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world
in righteousness by that man whom he hath
ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto
all men, in that he hath raised him from the
dead.
32 And
when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others
said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
33 So Paul departed from among
them. Acts 17:27-33
17 And
moreover, I say unto you, that there
shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby
salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name
of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.
18 For behold he judgeth, and his judgment is
just; and the infant perisheth not that dieth in his infancy; but men drink damnation to their own souls except
they humble themselves and become as little children, and believe that
salvation was, and is, and is to come, in and through the atoning blood of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.
19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from
the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the
enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a
saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a
child, submissive, meek, humble, patient,
full of love, willing to submit
to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child
doth submit to his father.
20 And moreover, I say unto you, that the time shall come when the
knowledge of a Savior shall spread throughout every nation, kindred,
tongue, and people.
21 And behold, when that time cometh, none shall be
found blameless before God, except it be little children, only through repentance and faith
on the name of the Lord God Omnipotent. Mosiah
3:17-21
11 And
now remember, my son, if it were not for the plan of redemption,
(laying it aside) as soon as they were
dead their souls were miserable, being cut off from the presence of the
Lord.
12 And now, there was no means to reclaim men from this
fallen state, which man had brought upon himself because of his own
disobedience;
13 Therefore, according to
justice, the plan of redemption
could not be brought about, only on
conditions of repentance of men in this probationary state, yea, this preparatory state; for except it were for these conditions,
mercy could not take effect except it should destroy the work of justice.
Now the work of justice could not be destroyed; if so, God would cease to be God.
14 And thus we see that all mankind were fallen, and they were in
the grasp of justice; yea,
the
justice of God, which consigned them forever to be cut off from his
presence.
15 And now, the plan
of mercy could not
be brought about except an atonement
should be made; therefore God himself atoneth for the sins of the world, to
bring about the plan of mercy, to appease the demands of justice,
that God might be a perfect, just God, and a
merciful God also.
16 Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a
punishment, which also was eternal as the life of the soul
should be, affixed opposite to the
plan of happiness, which was as eternal also as the life of the soul. Alma
42:11-16
7 And now, ye
see by this that our first parents
were cut off both temporally and spiritually from the presence of the
Lord; and thus we see they became subjects to follow after their own will.
8 Now behold, it was not expedient
that man should be reclaimed from this temporal death, for that would destroy the great plan of happiness. Alma
42:7-8
12 Make not thy gift known unto any save it be those who are of
thy faith.
Trifle not with sacred things.
13 If
thou wilt do good, yea, and hold out faithful to the end, thou shalt be saved in the kingdom of God, which is the greatest of all the gifts of God; for there is no gift greater than the gift
of salvation.
Doctrine
and Covenants 6:12-13
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which
speaketh unto you as unto children,
My son, despise not thou the
chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
6 For whom
the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he
receiveth.
7 If
ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father
chasteneth not?
8 But
if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye
bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave
them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of
spirits, and live?
10 For they verily
for a few days chastened us after their own
pleasure; but he for our profit, that we
might be partakers of his
holiness. Hebrews 12:5-10
4 Then the word of the Lord came unto
me, saying,
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;
and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained
thee a prophet unto the nations.
Jeremiah
1:4-5
3 Blessed be the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places
in Christ:
4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the
world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
5 Having predestinated us unto
the adoption of children by Jesus Christ
to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
6 To the praise of the glory of his grace,
wherein he hath made us accepted
in the beloved.
7 In
whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians 1:3-7
28 And we know that all things work together for good
to them that love God, to them who
are the called according to his purpose.
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might
be the firstborn among many
brethren.
30 Moreover
whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them
he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be
for us, who can be
against us?
32 He that spared not his own Son, but
delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all
things?
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s
elect? It is God that justifieth.
Romans 8:28-33
17 And the devil shall smell it, and flee away, and never come again
any more: but when thou shalt come to
her,
rise up both of you, and pray to God
which is merciful, who will have pity on you, and save you: fear not, for she is appointed unto thee
from
the beginning; and thou shalt preserve her,
and she
shall go with thee.
Moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children. Now when Tobias had heard these things,
he loved her, and his heart was effectually joined to her.
Tobit
6:17
6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the
children of disobedience.
7 Be not ye therefore partakers
with them.
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye
light in the Lord: walk as children of light: Ephesians 5:6-8
4 That the righteousness of the law might
be fulfilled in us, who walk not
after the flesh, but after
the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind
the things of the flesh; but
they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death;
but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because
the carnal mind is enmity against God: for
it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So
then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be
that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And
if
Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is
life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up
Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he
that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by
his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not
to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For
if ye
live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify
the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as
many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye
have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received
the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The
Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Romans 8:4-16
17 Yea, verily, verily I
say unto you, if all men
had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would
have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the
hearts of the children of men.
Alma 48:17
22 Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before
the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble
and great ones;
23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the
midst of them, and he said: These I
will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and
he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.
24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and
he said unto those who were with him:
We will go down, for there is space there, and
we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon
these may dwell;
25 And we will prove them herewith,
to see if they will do all things whatsoever
the Lord their God shall command them;
26 And they who keep their first estate shall be
added upon; and they who keep
not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those
who keep their first estate; and they
who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads
for ever and ever.
27 And the Lord said: Whom
shall I send? And one answered like
unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered
and said: Here am I, send me.
And the Lord said: I will send the
first.
28 And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate;
and, at that day, many followed after him.
Abraham 3:22-28
1 And
I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses,
saying: That
Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten,
is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me,
saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son,
and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give
me thine honor.
2 But, Behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning,
said unto me—Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine
forever.
3 Wherefore,
because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the
agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine
own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten,
I caused that he should be cast down;
4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the
father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead
them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my
voice. Moses 4:1-4
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the
morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which
didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine
heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of
God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the
north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the
clouds; I will be like the most
High.
15 Yet
thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. Isaiah 14:12-15
13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious
stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and
the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald,
and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes
was prepared in thee in the day that
thou wast created.
14 Thou art
the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so:
thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from
the day that thou wast created, till
iniquity was found in thee.
Ezekiel 28:13-15
6 Now there was
a day when the sons of God came to
present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.
7 And the
Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and
from walking up and down in it.
8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an
upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Then
Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth
Job fear God for nought? Job 1:6-9
30 All truth is independent in that
sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence
also; otherwise there is no existence.
31 Behold, here is the agency of man, and
here is the condemnation of man; because that which was
from the beginning is plainly
manifest unto them, and they
receive not the light.
32 And every man whose spirit receiveth
not
the light is under condemnation.
33 For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fulness of joy;
34 And when separated, man cannot receive a fulness of joy.
Doctrine
and Covenants 93:30-34
25 And this we saw also, and bear record, that an angel of
God who was in authority
in the presence of God, who rebelled
against the Only Begotten Son whom the Father loved and who was in the
bosom of the Father, was thrust down
from the presence of God and the Son,
26 And
was called Perdition, for the heavens wept over him—he was Lucifer,
a son of the morning.
27 And we beheld, and lo, he is fallen! is fallen, even a son of the morning!
28 And while we were yet in the Spirit, the
Lord commanded us that we should write the vision; for we beheld Satan, that old serpent, even the
devil, who rebelled against God, and sought to take the kingdom of our
God and his Christ—
29 Wherefore, he maketh war with the saints of God, and
encompasseth them round about.
30 And
we saw a vision of the sufferings of those with whom he made war and
overcame, for thus came the voice of the Lord unto us:
31 Thus
saith the Lord concerning all those who know my power, and have been
made partakers thereof, and suffered
themselves through the power of the devil to be overcome, and to deny
the truth and defy my power—
32 They are they who are the sons of
perdition, of whom I say that it
had been better for them never to have been born;
33 For
they are vessels of wrath, doomed to suffer the wrath of God, with
the devil and his angels in eternity;
34 Concerning whom I have said there is no forgiveness in this world nor in the
world to come—
35 Having denied the Holy Spirit after having
received it, and having denied the Only Begotten Son of the
Father, having crucified him unto
themselves and put him to an open shame.
36 These are they
who shall go away into the lake of fire and brimstone, with
the devil and his angels—
37 And the only ones on whom the second death shall have any power;
38 Yea, verily, the only ones who shall not be redeemed
in the due time of the Lord, after the sufferings of his wrath.
39 For all the rest shall be brought forth by the resurrection of the
dead, through the triumph and the glory of the Lamb, who was slain, who
was in the bosom of the Father before the worlds were made.
40 And this is the gospel, the glad tidings, which the voice
out of the heavens bore record unto us—
41 That
he came into the world, even
Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear
the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it
from all unrighteousness;
42 That through him all
might be saved whom the Father had put into his power and made by him;
43 Who glorifies the Father, and
saves all the works of his hands, except
those sons of perdition who deny the Son after the Father has revealed
him.
44 Wherefore, he saves all except them—they shall go away into
everlasting punishment, which is endless punishment, which is eternal
punishment,
to reign with the devil and his
angels in eternity, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched, which is their torment— Doctrine
and Covenants 76:25-44
11 Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world,
Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold,
thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with
him, and his work before him.
12 And
they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A
city not forsaken. Isaiah 62:11-12
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all that mourn;
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.
4 And they shall build
the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they
shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. Isaiah 61:2-4
19 So shall they fear
the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun.
When the enemy shall come in like a
flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a
standard against him.
20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion,
and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.
21 As
for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the
Lord; My spirit that is
upon thee,
and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not
depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth
of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from
henceforth and for ever.
Isaiah 59:19-21
